Underspace Free Download (v1.30.0)
I’ve always dreamed of what it’d be like to go to the stars. The endless exploration, The endless opportunities. The endless peril. Shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Babylon 5 always captured my imagination. It’s why I’ve always gravitated to Sci-Fi games: G-Police, Colony Wars Vengence, Star Trek: Dominion Wars, and, of course, Freelancer. And it’s Freelancer that’s been top of my mind recently, especially after five hours with Underspace. It’s been quite a throwback experience. For the most part, it works well, but after sinking about five hours into Underspace at this very early stage, is it a little too derived? Let’s find out. Before getting into the meat of what Underspace is, it’s worth picking up why the game exists in the first place. It’s a passion project by the well-known train modding aficionado, Trainwiz, or as he’s known IRL, Kevin Brock. Brock earned his reputation by creating those train mods you’ve seen knocking around.

Piloting your ship in the Pastaspace Interactive title feels precisely the same as the mid-noughties space sim. Steering your ship feels effortless, snappy, and responsive, immediately after you hit the space bar, and point the nose of your craft at a target. Engaging targets, whether it be enemy craft, or Lovecraftian horrors (more on this later) is as simple as pushing a key to lock onto your prey, aligning your cursor with them, and blasting them into the ether. It’s immensely satisfying to track your target with your cursor, watch it glow red and rotate, and rain down a fusillade of plasma cannon fire from your bank of space lasers. Hunting down scrappers, mercenaries, couriers, pirates, starchasers, or any of the other 40 factions promised in Underspace is all done from the comfort of your ship. And while the demo I played didn’t have many available, the finished game promises to have over 60 ships, with over 150 pieces of equipment to outfit them. Ships range from classic scrappy fighters to cargo haulers, all designed to help you fulfill your alternate space life fantasies.
