Welcome to San Andreas, the fertile grounds in which the seeds for today’s modern Grand Theft Auto were planted and are now flourishing. Set in 1992, San Andreas is being torn apart by gang warfare, drugs and corruption which leads to the main protagonist Carl Johnson returning home in order to save his family and friends from looming disaster. Accompanying CJ are his brother Sweet, their friends Big Smoke and Ryder as they attempt to retake the streets of Los Santos and solve the murder of CJ’s mom. Along the way crooked cops, gangsters, federal agents, and mobsters make their usual appearances as well as a few new game mechanics make their first appearance.On legacy alone both San Andreas and Vice City are among fan favorites of the Grand Theft Auto franchise and for good reason, they both were amazing games that expanded greatly on what an open world sandbox game could offer. San Andreas set the standard for what future GTA games were measured against and where many of today’s modern GTA mechanics were born. If any Grand Theft Auto game deserves the anniversary treatment its San Andreas and 10 years after its initial release Rockstar had an opportunity to make this its definitive version, but ultimately fell short. Very early into the game its made apparent that this isn’t a retouched Xbox version but was lazily ported over from its mobile version and in doing so, has introduced numerous new bugs/glitches to the game.

Does this game introduce the characters, hand you a gun and tell you to go cap some foo’s? No, no it doesn’t, however it does start fairly quickly. Introduced almost as soon as CJ is we meet Officer Tenpenny and his merry men, Officer Pulaski and Officer Hernandez. Shortly after we’re drip fed the rest of the cast and before you know it you’re pedaling for your life as you and your homies are chased by a car full of Balla’s. The first handful of mission are all tutorial style missions as they introduce you to the games mechanics and really try to cement the gangster way of life, stressing the ‘hood and family as much as possible. External image Ryder, Big Smoke, CJ and his brother Sweet. As the story progresses, the plot thickens and the environments change so does the mood and tone of the game and it keeps you wanting to find out more. The pace and story progression overall were done very well albeit some dull parts in between.(wasn’t too crazy about second act of the game) Cut-scenes often have background characters and vehicles freeze in place and audio will cut out but but it doesn’t really detract from the story. Whether you know the story or not, it’d be pretty hard to ruin it but with the sound cutting out in cut-scenes especially during later missions does take away from the emotion being portrayed.
