Graphically, it won’t win any awards, and the map layouts may seem basic, but occasionally follow the John Romero school of map design, and will loop back onto themselves. Random environmental hazards will keep you on your toes, and though some secrets seem obvious (there’s a gun up on that ledge) getting there requires a bit more intellect and keyboard prowess than first imagined.

The shotgun has good range, and the MP5 feels unhinged – and don’t get me started on the Heavy MG. With your arsenal at the ready, enemies blast apart like it’s the fourth of July. And let’s talk about the enemies. For the most part, they have the survival instincts of a tree branch and the IQ of a tennis ball. But, they do have a certain ‘chess piece’ formula, where some will relentlessly charge like a wounded bull, while others will hang back and pelt you with fireballs. Though enemy variety may not seem great, each variant comes in many flavours, adding to the party. Plus, there’s a bloody Hydra If you’re a fan of games from a simpler time like OG Quake, Doom (the real one) Will Rock, ye olde Serious Sam, or just a disgruntled older FPS player such as myself who’s sick of the ridiculous ammo farming and endless multiple upgrading paths/micro managing of every minutiae/needing to check a map just to find a place to insert some dumb crystal
