Terraformers is a simulation of the colonization and subsequent terroforming of mars. The mars is covered by interconnected nodes with certain properties: Some can provide space for cities, some provide ressources, some are just building spots. The game is turn-based. Each turn you accumulate ressource and each turn you are presented with a number of building options, for city buildings, space projects or surface buildings. The main antagonist in this game is “support”. Some buildings and events will provide support, while each turn some approval will be removed as a symbol of the waning support for the Mars project from earth. As the amount deducted increases with time,

the game becomes harder and you may eventually lose when you run out of support. The fact that you can only produce buildings you get from a random list each turn, does not only make the game unpredictable – it also doesnt make any sense. There are a lot of different buildings and getting a specific building can be very difficult. I also dont get what these building would represent in real life. Since you have to invest ressources to actually produce the building, those seem to be like blueprints? Why dont i just know how to build a building? Cant blueprints be copied in the future?

The second problem i see is the antagonist: Support. Sure, i understand that game mechanic-wise you need something to play against. Since there are no other players on Mars, what could be the antagonist? Similar games like Alpha Centauri had indigenous life forms and the other factions, but on Mars there is not much aside from the environment itself. But the way it’s implemented isn’t fun…. its just that every other turn the amount of support deducted increases. The weird thing is, that you dont get much support in terms of ressources

and stuff anyway from earth, so why can this cause the game to end? I like the basic concept, but some of the game design decisions dont sit well with me. I’d rather prefer some kind of skill tree to get access to new buildings instead of drwaing random buildings each turn and i’d really like to see other ways of losing the game and not just a generic support-counter. was kind of surprised how hooked I got on this game. It is very well designed and engaging from the beginning to the very end.
