The game is set in 1960 and follows Jack, the protagonist, after his plane crashes in the Atlantic Ocean. Jack discovers the underwater city of Rapture, an ambitious utopia created by industrialist Andrew Ryan to escape government control, religious influence, and conventional morality. However, Rapture has descended into chaos. The city’s isolation and lack of oversight led to the discovery of ADAM, a genetic substance that allows people to alter their DNA and gain superhuman abilities. The substance is harvested from sea slugs and amplified by implanting them into little girls known as Little Sisters. This led to widespread addiction, genetic mutations, and the eventual downfall of Rapture.
